‘I Love You’ in More Ways Than One
July 29, 2005 by borababy
I once had this hilarious but very insightful conversation with former colleagues of mine. Actually, it was rather accidental that we’ve discovered how you can tell one’s social class by how she sings that tune for playing jumping rope.
(DISCLAIMER: I used ‘she’ for the obvious reason that it was the girls who jump roped when they’re young, unless one’s an aspiring boxer and/or gay).
One day, conita L. was absently singing, “I love you teddy bear, teddy bear…”
Jolog Nonie heard and said, “Aaah, ‘teddy bear’ pala yun? All the while I thought it was ‘teliber’” (the nerve to speak Taglish pa).
Everyone: HAHAHAHAHA!!!
So that day, we’ve concluded the following:
When one sings it like, “I…love…you…teddy bear, teddy bear…” (enunciated with impeccable diction), she must’ve grown up in upscale neighborhoods like Forbes, SanLo, Xavierville, etc.
However, if one grew up thinking it was, “I…lab…you…teliber, teliber…”, by golly that person was unmistakably raised in some middle-class neighborhood and whose main language at home was Tagalog.
The C Class also sings it as: “I…lab…you…terrible, terrible…” (terrible talaga!)
And, there’s actually a third version: “I…lab…you…Sharon, Gabby…”. O di ba, I swear hindi ko kinaya ‘yon! You give the verdict as to which social class it belongs to.
Do you know any other versions?

An older jolog would sing “I love you Telly Aldeguer, Telly Aldeguer.” Now if you don’t know the Aldeguer Twins, then you’re Jaboom Twins jologs generation. Hmpfh!
hahaha…. couldn’t help but to laugh alone here…. Ngayon ko lang nalaman na “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear” pala un… Akala ko “I Love You Tele Bird, Tele Bird”… as in i thought song un na may kinalaman sa isang Bird…. hehehe…
